Get Everything You Want
He will give you the desires of your heart. – Psalm 37:4
Every person is made by God to “want.” We are made to actively pursue goals and purpose and outcome. We should not be passive. And God is anxious to give you what you want.
Verses like this one were a problem for me when I was younger. I couldn’t make sense of God’s desire to give me my desires while I didn’t get everything I wanted (also see Ps 145:19; Mt 6:33, 7:7-11; Jn 15:7; 1Jn 5:14). The real problem was that I wanted God to be my genie. I didn’t see God’s plan as better than my own.
So, what is God’s plan? To maximally display his character such that millions of souls will turn and worship in humility and awe. And we are brought into this position of worship by experiencing his love for us through his kindness in the work of Jesus – through the gospel.
This also means that as the Holy Spirit enlivens our hearts toward Jesus, his purpose becomes our purpose, and we begin to want the right things. This is why the beginning of Psalm 37:4 says, “Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart.”
Focus on Jesus. As you become satisfied with him and he becomes all you need, you will get everything you want.
Amazing Father, your plan is infinitely better than mine. But often I go back to my earthly priorities – I’m sorry. Thank you for saving me simply because you are kind. I want to align with your vision of life. Please make me see you as I should. Amen
