God Gave Even More

I gave your master’s house to you, and your master’s wives into your arms. I gave you all Israel and Judah. And if all this had been too little, I would have given you even more. - 2 Samuel 12:8

In this passage King David is being confronted with his sin. Even though God was blessing him beyond imagination and was anxious to give him even more, David wanted what God wouldn’t give him. Just like Adam and Eve and everyone else (you and me), David wanted what was wrong. God’s abundance was overflowing but David thought it best to go his own way.

If you’re not familiar with the story, David had been on the receiving end of a continual stream of blessing: God chose him – a shepherd – to be king, God gave him military victories (remember Goliath?), God gave him divine protection and promised him an eternal dynasty and to love him forever. But then David found the wife of one of his uber-loyal soldiers attractive, and being the commander and chief, he had his soldier killed so he could have his wife.

If there is one theme that doesn’t stop, it’s that we are not good people. If we have little or we have much, if we are strong or weak, we want what God won’t give us. We can’t get it right. But thankfully, it didn’t end there, and God gave even more.

Contained in God’s promises to David was the One who would be the better King and take on our burden of performance. Jesus would live a righteous life for us.

Jesus, you are the substitute I need because I am a sinner. You lived the life I should live, and you died the death I should die. Thank you for loving me. Please cause me to see your goodness and be satisfied with all you have for me.

Song: Living Hope

Know that a person is not justified by the works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ... because by the works of the law no one will be justified. - Galatians 2:16
