God Hears His Children - Psalm 6
The Lord has heard my plea; the Lord accepts my prayer. - Psalm 6:9
Do you ever think that God doesn’t listen to you? He does hear you (Prov 15:29; Is 65:24; Jer 33:3; 1 Pet 3:12; 1 Jn 5:14-15). Praying is not pointless. Jesus even taught the disciples how to pray (Matt 6:9-13). So, what’s the problem?
I’m aware of three big problems in my prayer life: First, I often think that if I want something bad enough, if my emotion is strong enough and I’m very earnest, this somehow obligates God to do what I want (I’m like a two-year-old). Second, often my heart is not aligned with God’s priorities and work. I’m self-focused and feel entitled. Third, I’m impatient.
How loving would it be if God gave us things that would harm us or work against his loving purposes (and, of course, I’m the best judge of what’s best)? But it’s difficult to imagine that something like cancer, death, or betrayal could serve God’s purposes and ultimately help us or those we love.
We are not in this alone. Jesus also prayed with loud cries and tears to him who was able to save him from death. (see Heb 5:7) But he trusted his Father. In that I am not God, it’s important that I don’t think God doesn’t hear or that there’s a better way.
Hearing Father, only you know what’s best for me and for those around me. I’m sorry for doubting and being short-sighted. Thank you for always bringing about what is best. Please give me a heart that trusts you in everything. Please turn my focus to the salvation of those around me. Amen
