The Crucifixion - John 19:17-27

READ JOHN 19:17-27

Jesus, even at the time of evil’s victory you shine as King and Scripture is fulfilled. Nothing can stop your complete triumph and the salvation of sinners. Even sin serves your purposes. It’s difficult for me to take this all in. I should be on my face. Your love and majesty should dominate every thought and action. But it doesn’t – I’m sorry. Thank you for dying for me even when I can’t respond the way I should. You are always the one who gives and I am always the one who receives. Jesus, please open my heart. I want to feel your love for me as I should. Amen

For dogs encompass me; a company of evildoers encircles me; they have pierced my hands and feet— Psalm 22:16

they divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots. - Psalm 22:18

It was providential and the fruit of God’s inexpressible purpose that the title was written in three languages: one in Hebrew, another in Latin and another in Greek. For it lay in plain view, proclaiming the kingdom of our Savior Christ in the most widely known of all languages … fulfilling the prophecy that had been spoken concerning him. For the wise Daniel said that there was given him glory and a kingdom and that all nations and languages shall serve him. Similarly Paul teaches us, crying out that “every knee shall bow; of things in heaven and things on earth and things under the earth. And every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” Therefore the title proclaiming Jesus “king” was, as it were, the true firstfruits of the confession of tongues. – Cyril of Alexandria

Even in the middle of humanity’s evil, the truth was proclaimed to all – Jesus is King!
