Not Your Doing But His - Psalm 1

The Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish. - Psalm 1:6

Those who are righteous will not perish. But is this me? After all, I'm far from righteous. My sin is real and extensive and continuous.

The key to claiming this promise is in understanding the contrast between the way of the righteous and the way of the wicked. Jesus clarified this when asked about the way. He said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me (John 14:6).” The way of the righteous is not our good works or our effort; the way is Jesus. The way is through Jesus.

So, how do I go through Jesus? What images come to mind when you think about going through something? I think of going through a tunnel or a doorway or a difficult situation or a waterfall (I’ve done that). Going through something means you don’t go around; you are immersed in it.

The way of the righteous is emersion in Jesus. The way of the righteous is another way of saying the way of Jesus because he is the righteousness we need.

Kind Father, while you love to save the righteous, I know that trusting in my goodness will end in death. Thank you for providing righteousness for me. Please remove any hope I have in my own merit and move my trust onto Jesus. Amen
