Random Is Not Random

The dice are thrown into the lap, but their every decision is from the Lord. - Proverbs 16:33

The idea of God being sovereign over absolutely everything can stretch us to the point of breaking. In fact, that’s what it will do. It will either cause us to throw up our hands in unbelief or cause us to bow the knee.

But then how could the God who created all of this not rule all of his creation? However, we tend to resist God’s rule for many reasons. Life seems to run on it’s own or we see something horrible and can’t see why a loving God would allow it (even though we resist thinking about our own contribution to horrible events). Or we simply must be the ultimate decision-maker in our little world.

This verse in Proverbs is not the only example of what the Bible says about God’s rule; Here are a few others: Isaiah 46:9-10; Daniel 4:35; Job 4:22; Psalm 22:28, 135:6; Ephesians 1:11; Colossians 1:16-17.

While these are just a few verses, the Bible’s main storyline is one of God’s sovereign work that started “in the beginning” and will not stop until he brings all his children home.

From the first glimpse of the gospel in Geneses 3:15 to the birth of Jesus to his horrible death and wonderful resurrection, to the very end when we will be home, God is in control. And, of course, there’s that moment when God opens the eyes of the lost and they see and believe.

God’s rule should be a comfort to us. None of this is random and he will not fail to gather his lost sheep.

God your plan and your promises cannot fail. There is no case where your purposes are not achieved. I’m sorry for resisting you. Thank you for only doing what is best even when I don’t get it. Please cause me to love your ways.
